Welcome to the first post of a blog dedicated to honouring buraanbur—the poetry, the movement, the power and the legacy.
There is something timeless about buraanbur. For generations, it has been more than just verses and jumping. It has been a form of resistance, of celebration, of remembrance. It has been a voice for Somali women—strong, tender, unfiltered. And today, more than ever, it still matters.
In a world where we often try to simplify each other, to fit one another into neat boxes, buraanbur offers us a space to expand. Through it, we explore the full complexity of what it means to be a woman. We honour both femininity and strength. We ask what it means to be soft and fierce, nurturing and powerful, graceful and grounded. Buraanbur makes space for all of it and us.
This blog will be a home for everything buraanbur touches: culture, identity, womanhood, community and creativity. A place where expression is not only welcomed but necessary. A place where we honour the importance of being in community with other women—and the stories that shape us.
Thank you for being here. This is just the beginning.
With love,
A fellow buraanburista <3
